Making a Difference: Tips for Charitable Donations in New Zealand

Updated: Jul 28

New Zealand's charity landscape is diverse with an estimated 28,000 registered charities.

The sector has an annual total income of more than $21 billion and it is supported by more than 217,000 volunteers and more than 145,000 full-time staff (equivalent to 5 percent of New Zealand’s workforce).

A charitable purpose, for legal and registration purposes, broadly falls into four categories: relief of poverty, advancement of education, advancement of religion, and any other purpose beneficial to the community.

For donors looking to make impactful contributions, understanding this landscape and making informed decisions is crucial.

Here are five tips to help you navigate your charitable donations effectively:

  • Research the Charity: Before donating, ensure that the organisation is registered with Charities Services. The Charities Register provides important information about an organisation's activities, financials, and governance. This transparency helps you understand how your donation will be used and ensures it supports legitimate causes. Search the charity using the Charities Services register below https://register.charities.govt.nz/CharitiesRegister/Search

  • Align with Your Values: Choose charities that resonate with your personal values and priorities. Whether you are passionate about supporting local communities, animal welfare, or climate change, aligning your donations with your beliefs ensures that your contribution is meaningful to you and positively impactful.

  • Start Small: If you’re uncertain, consider making a smaller donation initially. This allows you to evaluate the charity's effectiveness and communication before committing to larger contributions.

  • Evaluate Impact: Look for charities that demonstrate transparency about their impact. Organisations that provide detailed reports on their outcomes and effectiveness are often more reliable. Assessing impact can be challenging, but seeking out testimonials, case studies, and data-driven results can provide insight into a charity's success.

  • Follow on Social Media: Engage with the charity on social media platforms to get a sense of their activities, campaigns, and community interactions. This can help you determine if their values resonate with yours and if they maintain transparency and authenticity in their communications.
